Central Air Conditioning Components

Central Air Conditioning Components

If you think that big boxy metal piece of equipment sitting outside is all there is to an air conditioner, well you don't know your condenser from your blower. Despite their looks, air conditioners are actually complex mechanical appliances. The more you know about how they operate, the better equipped you'll be when you shop for a new unit, or if something goes wrong with your air conditioner. Familiarize yourself with the main components of your air conditioner and learn more about HVAC lingo to build your knowledge base.

Condenser

The condenser is the big box metal unit that you see outside. The condenser houses the compressor, the condensing coil, the fan, the motor and exterior electrical components. The reason it sits outside is because it generates a lot of movement and a lot of heat. The warm air that is inside of your home is returned to the condenser. That's why the top of the unit and the air around it feel warm. So, by sitting outdoors, it can vent the heat it consumes and generates to keep all of the electrical components inside the cabinet running effectively and efficiently.

Evaporator

The evaporator is also called the "A coil" because it's shaped like the letter "A." The evaporator is a key player in making your air conditioner work, but unlike the condenser, you don't see it at work because it's housed indoors inside the ductwork. The furnace blows air over the evaporator coil, where it is cooled by Freon inside the coils.

Line Set

This refers to the copper tubing that connects the evaporator to the condenser. You may not see the actual copper tubing because it is covered by thick black rubberized insulation. The line set is like the lifeline for the air conditioner. The copper tubes contain Freon that run through the line set like blood through veins, except in this case it's "cold blooded" Freon at work, absorbing the heat and sending it back as cool air to the A coil for venting through the ducts and vents.

Compressor

The compressor is like the traffic cop of the air conditioning system. It directs and transports both hot and cooled air. It sends warm air from inside of your home to outdoor condensing coils to dump it into the atmosphere. Simultaneously, it send the cooled air from the line set indoors to the A coil, which sends the cool air through the ductwork.

Blower

The blower is a fan that pushes the cooled air through the ductwork and vents the cool air into the rooms of your home. The blower takes orders on when to blow air and when not to blow from your thermostat. If you have a single-stage air conditioning unit, the blower will pretty much run continuously until the desired indoor temperature is reached. But if you have a two-stage air conditioner, the blower will take breaks and run at different speeds, such as 67 percent of its capacity during stage one, and at 100 percent capacity during stage two. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. Two-stage blowers help keep indoor temperatures consistent by using "intelligent technology." They know how to pace themselves and use their energy efficiently and wisely.
