Expected Savings With the High-Efficiency HVAC System

High-efficiency heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems can save you money. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. The efficiency of an air-conditioning system, for instance, is measured by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER rating. This rating is calculated by dividing the amount of energy needed by the air-conditioning unit in cooling the room, by the actual amount of energy spent. The higher the SEER rating, the more money you can generally expect to save. Furnace efficiency is measured by its annual fuel utilization efficiency, or AFUE, rating.

SEER and AFUE Ratings

Air-conditioning units installed after 2006 have a SEER rating of at least 13, thanks to the requirements put forth by the U.S. Department of Energy. Prior to 2006, SEER ratings could be as low as seven. Since that time, the ratings have been between 13 and 27. While having a 13 SEER-rated system is certainly more energy-efficient than older systems with lower ratings, the 27 SEER system is more than twice as efficient. AFUE ratings, on the other hand, are expressed as a percentage. This percentage represents a ratio of the heat output to the amount of energy consumed to produce it. The higher the percentage, the higher the energy efficiency. Some boiler and forced-air systems have AFUE ratings in excess of 90 percent.

Energy Calculation

Determining your expected savings with a high-efficiency HVAC system involves first determining the number of kilowatt hours you currently use your system for each year. Determine your air-conditioning usage separately from your heating system usage. Multiply each number times cost per kilowatt hour that your local utility company charges and add them together. This is how much you spend per year in energy costs. Using the energy guide located on the high-efficiency HVAC system you plan to purchase, subtract the new system's expected energy costs per year from your normal energy costs, to find out potential savings each year.

Considerations

Because each home is different, it is impossible to determine the exact amount you can expect to save with a more energy-efficient model. While it is possible that you can get an idea of the reduction of energy used and multiply this out based on your local utility company's rates, you cannot be exact with your calculations because your home's ability to retain its cold and warm air must also be taken into account. A home without energy-efficient windows, for example, will cost homeowners more money in the long run than will a home where the windows are energy-efficient. The home's insulation also factors into the equation.

Savings

The amount you can save with a higher-efficiency HVAC unit will vary, but you can gain a general idea of this by expressing it in terms of the amount of money you save for every $100 you normally spend. Carrier notes, for example, that the transition from an 8 SEER to a 9 SEER air-conditioning unit will save you an additional $12 for every $100 spent per year. The transition to the minimum required 13 SEER unit would net a savings of $38 per year per $100 spent, while a 21 SEER unit -- the largest offered by Carrier -- would bring a savings of $61 per $100 annually. The process can be repeated for calculating your savings on heating costs. For instance, the transition from a furnace with an 80-percent AFUE rating to one with a 90-percent rating will save you $16 per year for every $100 spent.
