While an air conditioner and air cooler ultimately have the same goal, the two use different methods to cool the air. The biggest difference between the two is the exhaust system. An air conditioner is more complex in that it must have an exhaust outlet that leads outdoors, while an air cooler doesn't utilize an exhaust system at all.

An air conditioner unit features a condenser fan and a cooling element, which work in conjunction with each other to cool the home or room. Air is sucked in through the intake grille of the unit, cooled and blown out through the front vents. Impurities in the air, such as humidity, are evaporated and exhausted out of the back of the unit into the outside air. Some humidity drips out of the back of the unit or is collected in the drain pan or tank inside of the unit. If the liquid collects in an internal tank, the tank must be drained when full or the unit shuts off.

When the internal tank indicator on the air conditioner interface illuminates to signal that the tank is full, the tank must be emptied immediately. If the air conditioner is in the middle of a cool or dry cycle, the cooling or dehumidifying component deactivates right away while the fan continues to run. Either the tank comes out of the unit or the entire unit can be transported to a drainage area and drained.

Before the air cooler is activated, its internal water tank must be filled with a mixture of 1 part ice to 2 parts water. During the cooling process, if the water tank falls to the "Empty" or "Low" fill line, an indicator light on the air cooler interface illuminates. The unit fails to cool until the tank is refilled. Some units feature a spout on the side of the unit that can be flipped out. The icy mixture can be poured into the spout to the maximum fill line. Avoid filling the tank above the maximum fill line. Add ice cubes or ice packs to the icebox compartment, which is located at the very top of some units.
