DIY Home Ductless A/C

DIY Home Ductless A/C

If you want to keep your house cool without the expense and trouble of installing central air conditioning, don't worry -- you can lower the temperature inside without snaking ductwork throughout your home. Americans kept their homes cool for hundreds of years before the advent of central air, and they did it by simply manipulating the air inside -- and outside -- their walls. When you do the same, you'll notice the temperature drop without your electric bill skyrocketing.

Instructions

    1

Open a lower-level window on one side of the house and an upper-level window on the opposite side. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. The lower-level window works best if it is on the windy side of your house, as the window pulls in the air, circulates it through the house and ejects it out the upper window.

    2

Open all of your windows at night to let the cool air in, and then close them -- except for the two described previously -- to seal in the cool air and keep warm air out.

    3

Turn on fans when you're in the room to circulate air and create a cooling breeze. Despite the cooling effect, fans don't actually lower the room temperature, so save energy by turning them off when you leave the room.

    4

Install window unit air conditioners in rooms with poor air circulation or in rooms that receive more sunlight. Choose a unit that is powerful enough for each room -- they aren't one-size-fits-all units.
