How to Calculate Sub-Cooling on an HVAC System

HVAC systems, including air conditioners, circulate refrigerants through their parts to control their temperatures. One of these parts is the condenser, the temperature of which is measured when the refrigerant converts from a gas to a liquid. Sub-cooling refers to any additional refrigerant cooling that occurs. Instructions

    1

    Attach the digital thermometer's probe to the cooling system's liquid line a few inches from the system's expansion valve. Turn on the digital thermometer and record the temperature of the liquid line in Fahrenheit.

    Connect the pressure gauge to a service port on the liquid line. Turn on the pressure gauge and record the liquid line pressure in pounds per square inch.

    Convert the liquid line pressure to the condensing temperature in Fahrenheit using a refrigerant pressure/temperature chart.

    Subtract the liquid line pressure from the condensing temperature to calculate the amount of sub-cooling in Fahrenheit.
