Dehumidifiers work to remove the humidity, or evaporated water, from the air inside the home. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. They take in humid air, pass it through a series of coils and return it to the home, dryer and slightly warmer than it was taken in. This improves indoor air quality in a few ways.
How Dehumidifiers Work
Dehumidifiers work by taking in indoor air and blowing it across cold copper coils. These coils "sweat" just as a cold glass of water sweats in a hot room. The sweat, or condensation from humidity, accumulates in a basin at the bottom of the dehumidifier, from which it can be disposed of. The cooled air is blown across warm coils and is heated back up to roughly room temperature and dispersed back in to the room.
Dehumidifiers as Air Filters
Dehumidifiers have disposable or reusable air filters on the intake side of the unit. Before air is taken in and passed over the cold coils, it is passed through a filter to remove impurities. These filters can help reduce the amount of airborne allergens and fungal spores in your home. Indoor air quality can be improved by keeping your dehumidifier filter clean and choosing the highest rated filtration available for your unit.
Humidity and Mold
Many molds and mildews require a certain level of humidity to thrive. This is why damp basements and crawl spaces are often breeding grounds for potentially dangerous mold spores. Running a dehumidifier can help decrease the likelihood of having mold or mildew growth in damp rooms. Keep the water catch clean, and periodically wipe down the coils to prevent mold growth inside the unit.
Airborne Chemicals
There is some evidence that chemicals, such as formaldehyde, can exude from construction materials in to the air at a greater rate in humid climates. As such, running a dehumidifier can act in two ways to reduce the amount of these chemicals found in the air. First, they may reduce the rate at which the materials exude the chemicals. Second, they may remove the chemicals once they are airborne and contained within the water vapor. Clean your dehumidifier basin frequently and dispose of the waste water as soon as the basin is full to reduce exposure.
