How to Connect AC Capacitor Connections

If the compressor on your air conditioner runs, but it does not feel like it is blowing out cold air, there is a chance your compressor's run capacitor has blown. An air conditioner run capacitor is much larger than capacitors found in small electronic devices. It takes about an hour to connect the AC capacitor.

Instructions

Turn off the power to the air conditioner compressor from the main breaker.

Open the access panel on the compressor casing by removing the retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

Locate the capacitor and examine the three wires leading to the old capacitor. The leads will be marked "Fan," "Herm" and "C" for common. Tape three pieces of paper to the wires to mark them and then remove the leads from the top of the old capacitor by unscrewing them with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the metal clamp holding the old capacitor in place -- if there is one -- with a screwdriver.

Set the new capacitor in place and strap it into place with the metal band or bracket. Tighten it with a screwdriver.

Attach the marked wires to the corresponding terminals on the new capacitor with the screwdriver.

Replace the compressor access panel and restore power to the unit.
