Government Approved Energy Efficient Central Air Systems

As energy costs continue to rise, many homeowners are concerned about the long-term cost efficiency of the appliances in their home. Homeowners often seek to replace their appliances with more energy-efficient ones, and to aid in doing so, government agencies such as the Department of Energy label products that are especially energy-efficient. Central air conditioners, for example, often use more energy than any other home appliance, so finding central air conditioners that meet the government's standards for energy efficiency can potentially save a lot of money in the long run.

Energy Star

Energy Star was created by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help consumers choose energy efficient appliances. Energy Star establishes baseline values for energy efficiency and labels products that meet or exceed those values. The idea is to provide consumers with a quick, standard and consistent service that allows them to know whether they can save money on a given appliance before they purchase it.

Efficiency Ratings

According to Energy Star, a product earns an Energy Star label if it meets a set of criteria established by the DOE and EPA. So if an air conditioner has an Energy Star approval, you can be reasonably assured that the air conditioner will contribute to overall energy savings wherever you live. It should also deliver the performance and features that customers demand while still remaining energy efficient and by using non-proprietary technology that any company can use. Energy Star approved air conditioners can sometimes be more expensive that their less efficient counterparts. For the air conditioner to earn the Energy Star label, the customer must recover those costs in long-term energy cost savings.

Other Tips for Efficient A/C shopping

To understand how you could save money with an energy efficient air conditioner, you must understand how efficiency is measured by federal regulatory agencies. Regulators use a metric known as Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) to evaluate the efficiency of air conditioners. Every air conditioner that bears an Energy Star sticker will display its SEER rating as well. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. The higher an air conditioner's SEER rating, the more energy efficient that air conditioner is. The federally mandated minimum SEER rating for all air conditioners sold in the United States is 13, but an air conditioner is considered energy efficient only if the air conditioner has an SEER rating of 14 or better.

Other Considerations

The amount of money that you will actually save depends on a number of unique factors, including the size of your home, the type of air conditioner you purchased, the temperature at which the thermostat is set, the mechanical condition of the air conditioner, the price of electricity in your community, among other things. Even given all these variables, however, you can reasonably expect some degree of savings by purchasing an air conditioner with an Energy Star label and and SEER rating of at least 14.
