Dirty evaporator coils in your AC window unit could result in inefficient indoor cooling. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. The grimy buildup on the coils prevents the air from cooling around them, so clean the coils approximately once a year when you plan to use the air conditioner in the spring or beginning of summer. Because the cleaning process can be a bit messy, its best to carry the unit outside before applying the cleaner. Youll need to spray it off with a water hose, so access to a working water faucet is required. To avoid having to dismount the entire window unit from its window, some air conditioners come fitted inside of a metal cabinet or box. The air conditioner unit can be removed from this cabinet and taken outside.
Instructions
- 1
Push the On/Off or Power button on the window unit to turn the power off. Grasp the plug and pull it out of the wall power outlet.
2Pull the grille off the front of the unit. The cover might be attached with plastic fitted parts or with screws, so avoid breaking the grille. Insert a screwdriver into the grille screws and unscrew them.
3Insert your finger into the lower lip of the unit and pull the unit toward you. If the unit pulls loose, pull it completely out of the cabinet and carry the unit outside. Locate the screws that fasten the unit to the cabinet, if the cabinet doesnt pull out of the unit. Insert a screwdriver into the screws and unscrew them. Set the screws aside and pull the unit out of the cabinet.
4Carry the unit outside to a clear, level area. Insert a brick or block underneath the front side of the air conditioner, so that the electrical components of the unit are elevated and the inside coils are higher than the outside coils.
5Spray the air conditioner coil cleaner on the inside coils and the condenser fan blades. Allow the cleaner to sit for approximately five minutes.
6Screw the end of the water hose onto the faucet and turn it on. Bring the hose over to the front of the air conditioner and spray down the condenser fan blades and coil. Avoid spraying the area of the air conditioner containing the electrical components, as the water will damage them. The water will drain down toward the back of the air conditioner.
7Lift the front of the air conditioner to confirm that all water has drained from the unit. Allow the unit to dry completely.
8Pick up the unit and carry it back inside. Insert the unit back into the cabinet and replace the necessary screws. Fasten the front cover back to the unit and plug it in. Press the Power button to test the unit.
