A window unit air conditioner supplies cold air to rooms and sometimes entire floors of a home. This air is drawn in from outdoors and instantly is cooled using refrigerant that expands into gas, drawing heat from the air, and is compressed back into liquid. Because the refrigerant is integral to the cooling process, several problems can occur when the freon begins to leak.
Warm Air
The most direct indicator that an air conditioning unit suffers from a refrigerant leak is warm air coming from the system. A precise amount of refrigerant is stored inside the air conditioning system and, during normal operation, this amount of freon passes on a recycling loop, with just enough refrigerant to cool the air in the system consistently. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. When a leak occurs, refrigerant leaks out and causes the recycling system to stumble because it doesnt have enough freon to cool consistently. As the leak continues, intermittent warm air spells turn into constantly warm air blowing through the air conditioner vents.
Compressor Failure
Most air conditioning units feature an internal thermostat that gives the user control over the temperature. As the homeowner selects a cooler temperature, the compressor activates and the unit generates cool air until the room is cooled to the indicated temperature. When the room is adequately cooled, the compressor shuts down and rests. A lack of freon will cause the air conditioner to continually operate the compressor, trying to reach its desired temperature. This causes a great deal of stress and can even cause failure in parts such as the compressor.
Frozen Evaporator Coils
If the leak is located in or near the evaporator coils, it is coming out of the air conditioner at temperatures between 20 and 50 degrees below 0. This temperature can freeze evaporator coils and the moisture in the air surrounding them. Should you notice that the coils are frozen, power down the unit immediately, ventilate the room properly by opening all windows and contact a qualified service technician for repair.
Health Indicators
Leaks that occur inside the air conditioning unit can lead to refrigerant in gaseous form getting into the air inside the house. Exposure to refrigerant in this small quantity does not pose long-term health risks to healthy individuals. Still, those exposed to refrigerant may experience headaches, burning eyes and even trouble breathing. Those with heart conditions may experience palpitations and arrhythmia. Ventilate and evacuate the area immediately if feeling these symptoms as a result of a freon leak.
